How does exercise help people living with chronic pain?

In the U.S., chronic pain is thought to affect over 116 million adults; more than diabetes, cancer, and heart disease combined. While chronic pain is not always obvious to outsiders, the physical and psychological toll of chronic pain can significantly reduce your quality of life.

There is an increasing amount of scientific research showing the benefits of exercise in managing and reducing chronic pain.

Exercise has been found to be effective in relieving pain and benefiting peoples’ daily physical function in various chronic musculoskeletal pain disorders, including chronic neck pain, knee & hip osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic low back pain. 

It is thought that exercise improves chronic pain through two key pathways. Firstly, exercise is known to reduce pain sensitivity and inflammation in the body. Secondly, there appears to be a direct link between increased muscle strength in areas of pain and reduced pain.
