Why is strength training important during menopause?

The significant hormonal changes that occur during menopause are often associated with physical and psychological symptoms that can negatively impact a woman’s wellbeing and quality of life.

The onslaught of symptoms includes, but is not limited to, muscle and joint pain, headaches, sleep problems, lack of energy, mood swings, depression, and anxiety. In addition, menopause is also associated with increased risk for health issues such as osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

While the most common treatment for menopause is hormone therapy, there is now good scientific research to suggest that exercise (and in particular, strength training) can help to minimize some of the associated symptoms and reduce the risk of ongoing health problems.
